PM Modi Bids Farewell to Sedition Section with Passage of New Criminal Code Bills in Rajya Sabha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the passage of three criminal justice bills on Thursday, emphasizing the historic significance as India transitions from colonial-era acts to new laws focused on public service and welfare.
With the approval of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, outdated sections on sedition are also bid farewell. These legislations will replace the Indian Penal Code-1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure-1898, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872, marking a new era in India’s legal framework.
“These legislations signify the conclusion of colonial-era statutes. A new chapter commences with laws focused on public service and well-being,” stated the prime minister.
He remarked, “These groundbreaking legislations reflect India’s dedication to change, updating our legal, policing, and investigative systems with a focus on technology and forensic science. The bills aim to provide heightened protection for the disadvantaged and marginalized in society.” The Prime Minister emphasized that these laws take a tough stance on organized crime, terrorism, and offenses that hinder the nation’s peaceful progress.
“In our transformative era, these legal reforms reshape our legal framework to be more relevant and compassionate,” he noted, underscoring Home Minister Amit Shah’s parliamentary speeches that delve into the essential aspects of these bills.
