Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences on the passing of Tamil actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth, who succumbed to his illness at a private hospital in Chennai today, Thursday, December 28. In a message on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi stated, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji.”
“The Prime Minister acknowledged the legendary status of the Tamil film industry figure, emphasizing his captivating performances that endeared him to millions. In his role as a political leader, he demonstrated a strong dedication to public service, leaving an enduring mark on the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.”
He stated, “The loss he has left behind is significant and will be challenging to replace. As a dear friend, I cherish the memories of our interactions throughout the years. During this somber time, my heartfelt sympathies go out to his family, fans, and the many who admired him. May he rest in peace.”
Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, conveyed his sorrow over the passing of Vijayakanth. In a tweet, he expressed deep regret, acknowledging Vijayakanth’s significant impact on both the film industry and politics. Gandhi extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and fans of the late actor-politician during this challenging period.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed his condolences and paid tribute to his dear friend, Captain Vijayakanth, who served as the President of the National Progressive Dravidian Association. In a detailed post on X, Chief Minister Stalin acknowledged Vijayakanth’s positive qualities, highlighting his accomplishments in the film industry and public life. Stalin commended Vijayakanth’s achievements as an actor, president of the actors’ union, political party leader, legislator, and leader of the opposition, emphasizing his hard work and good-hearted nature.

Vijayakanth passed away on December 28 at a private hospital in Chennai, where he was admitted to MIOT Hospital due to a decline in his health. According to the hospital, he was placed on ventilatory support after being admitted for pneumonia.
Earlier on the same day, Vijayakanth’s political party had announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 and was put on a ventilator due to respiratory difficulties. However, the hospital’s bulletin stated that he was battling pneumonia. Hospital sources revealed that the party had made the statement before the results of the second round of samples were available.
Since November of this year, the former actor-turned-politician had been grappling
