An ethics panel report suggests the expulsion of Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha in light of allegations related to cash-for-query.

Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra

The Ethics Committee’s report on the ‘cash-for-query’ case involving Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra was presented in the Lok Sabha today. The report suggests that due to significant misconduct on Moitra’s part, she should face severe consequences. The Committee proposes the expulsion of Smt. Mahua Moitra from the Seventeenth Lok Sabha membership.

Due to the deeply objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal behavior exhibited by Ms. Mahua Moitra, the Committee suggests a thorough, legal, and institutional investigation by the Government of India within a specified timeframe. At a meeting held on November 9, the ethics committee, led by Vinod Kumar Sonkar, approved its report proposing Moitra’s removal from the Lok Sabha in light of the “cash-for-query” accusation.

Six members of the panel, which included Congress MP Preneet Kaur, previously suspended from the party, voted in favor of the report. Meanwhile, four members from opposition parties expressed dissent by submitting notes.

Bandyopadhyay questioned the decision to present the report on a Friday, typically reserved for Private Members’ Business, suggesting that it could have been introduced on a Monday. He raised concerns about potential motivations, alleging political vendetta.

The Ethics Committee report, initially scheduled for December 4, was not tabled and has now been listed as agenda item number 7 for Friday in the revised business list issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat.
