Afghanistan has declared the permanent shutdown of its embassy in Delhi, citing enduring difficulties with the Indian government.
The choice comes after the embassy had previously halted its activities on September 30, anticipating a positive shift in the Indian government’s position that would allow for the regular functioning of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in New Delhi, as stated in an official announcement by the Afghan embassy.
In a significant development, the Embassy of Afghanistan in New Delhi has declared its permanent closure, citing ongoing difficulties with the Indian government. The decision comes after the embassy temporarily ceased operations on September 30, with the expectation that the Indian government’s position would change to allow for the resumption of normal embassy activities. The announcement was made through an official statement from the Afghan embassy.
The embassy stated that despite an eight-week waiting period, the goals of extending visas for diplomats and witnessing a change in the Indian government’s behavior were not achieved. Faced with ongoing pressure from both the Taliban and the Indian government to relinquish control, the embassy found itself in a challenging position.
Acknowledging India as a longstanding strategic partner since 2001, the embassy recognizes the complexities and considerations involved in realpolitik and the delicate balance required in a geopolitically sensitive region. Consequently, the decision to close the mission in India at this juncture and transfer custodial authority to the host country is deemed to be in the best interest of Afghanistan, according to the statement.
The embassy acknowledged awareness that some individuals might interpret this action as an internal conflict, purportedly with diplomats aligning with the Taliban. However, the embassy emphasized that the decision stems from broader shifts in policy and interests. The embassy expressed sincere thanks to Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support during its mission. Despite facing constraints in resources and influence, the Afghan embassy asserted that it has diligently worked for the welfare of Afghan citizens, especially in the absence of a recognized government in Kabul.
In the past 27 months, there has been a notable decrease in the Afghan community in India, as observed by the embassy. Afghan refugees, students, and traders have been departing, leading to almost a 50% reduction since August 2021. The statement also highlighted the issuance of very few new visas during this timeframe.
“We want to reassure the Afghan community that our mission was conducted with openness, responsibility, and a dedication to equitable treatment, taking into account the positive historical connections and bilateral relations with India,” the statement emphasized.
At present, there are no representatives from the Afghan Republic in India. Those who were stationed in the capital have safely relocated to other countries, as stated by the embassy in its press release. Furthermore, the only individuals currently in India are diplomats associated with the Taliban, actively participating in their regular online meetings.
