AAP Leader Explains How Arvind Kejriwal Issued His First Order From Prison

Yesterday, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, issued a directive from the Enforcement Directorate’s lock-up addressing the regions experiencing water scarcity. In his inaugural directive from confinement, Kejriwal instructed the city’s Water Department to dispatch tankers to the afflicted areas to bolster water supply in anticipation of a blistering summer. The instruction was communicated via a written message sent to Atishi, the Delhi Water Minister, late in the evening.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has affirmed that there will be no alteration in leadership, even if it entails Arvind Kejriwal serving as the chief minister from jail. Kejriwal was arrested in a corruption case related to Delhi’s liquor policy and was remanded in custody until March 28. Despite his incarceration, Kejriwal issued directives from jail, instructing the department to ensure sufficient water supply in affected areas and advising the minister to seek assistance from the Lieutenant Governor if necessary. He expressed concern about water and sewer issues faced by people and emphasized the need to address these problems promptly. Kejriwal also conveyed a message urging continued societal work and advocating against harboring hatred, even towards those in the ruling BJP. However, prison rules limit an inmate to two meetings per week, posing challenges for Kejriwal to fulfill his duties as Chief Minister. The only feasible option for him to govern from confinement would be if he were placed under house arrest, which requires approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
