Dry lake bed in Bengaluru reveals dead fish amidst drought, highlighting city’s water crisis.
Amidst Bengaluru’s deepening water crisis, exacerbated by severe drought conditions, the city’s lakes are drying up, presenting a grim sight captured in a poignant photograph. Taken at Nallurahalli Lake in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area, the image portrays a lifeless fish lying on the desiccated lake bed. This particular lake gained notoriety in 2022 when it flooded, submerging over 400 vehicles in nearby apartments, highlighting the city’s infrastructural challenges. The recent image, captured by AFP photographer Idrees Mohammed on March 10, underscores larger ecological concerns, garnering significant attention on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter.
Renewed concerns about climate change have been sparked by recent images of drought and water scarcity, particularly highlighted by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s statement regarding the state’s dire drought conditions, described as the worst in three to four decades.
Simultaneously, authorities in Bengaluru have devised a strategy to combat dwindling lake levels by replenishing them with 1,300 million liters of treated water daily. This initiative aims to recharge the city’s groundwater, critical as approximately half of its borewells have dried up.
To address the water crisis, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) plans to implement innovative measures, including the installation of filter borewells and construction of water plants near restored lakes, ensuring a tested and reliable water supply for residents.
