Urgent Meeting Summoned by Manipur CM Biren Singh Following Fatal Shooting of Four Individuals
On New Year’s day, a recent outbreak of violence in Manipur resulted in the tragic deaths of four individuals, with several others sustaining injuries. Subsequent to this incident, curfew measures were reinstated in the five valley districts of the state. In Thoubal district, locals asserted that an unidentified group of men arrived with automatic weapons, purportedly for extortion purposes. Following the attack, enraged community members set fire to the gunmen’s vehicles. According to a witness, the armed group engaged in a confrontation with a familiar individual, leading to a violent escalation with indiscriminate shooting.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in a video statement, denounced the violence and urged the public to uphold peace.
“I deeply regret the loss of innocent lives. We have deployed police units to apprehend the perpetrators. I humbly request the residents of Lilong (where the incident occurred) to assist the government in identifying the culprits. I assure you that the government will exert every effort within the legal framework to ensure justice,” he stated.
He convened a pressing gathering with all ministers and MLAs from the ruling party.
After the recent outbreak of violence, authorities stated that a curfew had been reinstated in Thoubal, Imphal East, Imphal West, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts.
Two days ago, four security forces were injured in a gunfight between suspected insurgents and police commandos in Manipur’s border town Moreh. Insurgents fired several RPGs which exploded inside the CDO outpost building at Moreh Turelwangma Leikai where the commandos were staying, officials said.
