‘Guidance from Captain KL Rahul Inspires Arshdeep’s Remarkable Comeback Against South Africa in 1st ODI’
Arshdeep Singh acknowledged KL Rahul’s crucial role in his historic performance during the 1st ODI between India and South Africa.
KL Rahul, leading the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma, steered the Indian side to a remarkable victory against South Africa in the series opener. The pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan triggered a surprising batting collapse for the Proteas during the 1st One Day International (ODI) at Johannesburg’s New Wanderers Stadium. Arshdeep, previously criticized for his wicketless streak in his first three ODI outings for India, dismissed Reeza Hendricks with an eight-ball duck, marking his first success in the 50-over format.
Arshdeep made a significant impact for the visitors right from the start, taking Van der Dussen’s wicket for a golden duck with a new ball burst. The in-form pacer continued his stellar performance, dismissing Tony de Zorzi (28) and Heinrich Klaasen (6), and eventually claiming Andile Phehlukwayo to secure his first-ever five-wicket haul in ODI cricket. This marked a remarkable turnaround for Arshdeep, who, after going wicketless in his first three ODIs, now boasts five wickets and a career-best bowling figure of 5/37 in just his initial four games in the 50-over format.
Arshdeep scripted a memorable chapter against the Proteas as his outstanding bowling performance led to Aiden Markram’s South African side collapsing for 116 in just 27.3 overs. Debutant Sai Sudharsan opened the innings for India, contributing 55 runs, while Shreyas Iyer showcased his brilliance with another impressive half-century, securing an eight-wicket victory over South Africa. During the post-match presentation, Arshdeep acknowledged Rahul for his support in orchestrating a remarkable comeback.
“I express my gratitude to KL Rahul for his encouragement. Although I’m a bit sore right now, I’m truly savoring this moment. I want to thank God and the team management for their support. The experience was unique, especially dealing with the breathlessness on a different ground. KL Rahul motivated me to come back and secure that fifer, and I appreciate his words. Becoming the first Indian fast bowler to achieve an ODI fifer against South Africa in the series opener is a personal achievement that I take pride in.
I’m enjoying my role and contributing to the team’s motto of adaptability, whether opening or bowling first-change. Playing a 50-over game after a year, the heat was challenging, but it all paid off. After my five-for, I feel rejuvenated,” explained Arshdeep during the break. Looking ahead, Arshdeep-led Team India is set to face hosts South Africa in the series decider at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.”
