The three leading contenders for the next Chief Minister of Telangana from the Congress party are currently under consideration.

Telangana, India’s newest state established in 2014, has witnessed the singular dominance of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, in its political landscape. However, a significant shift is on the horizon, as the recently declared results of the assembly polls reveal a comprehensive victory for the Indian National Congress. The Congress secured 65 seats out of the 119-member Telangana assembly, while the BRS managed only 39 seats.

Despite this triumph, the Congress is yet to name a candidate for the Chief Minister position. Anticipation is high for an imminent announcement from the Congress high command regarding their choice for this crucial role in the state government.

Three prominent leaders from the Congress party are currently vying for the top post in Telangana.

  1. Revanth Reddy:
    • Revanth Reddy assumed the role of Telangana Congress chief in July 2021 and quickly garnered attention for his assertive leadership style, despite facing internal criticism within the party.
    • His ability to mobilize party members was evident when he successfully led the Congress campaign that resulted in the ousting of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in the recent elections.
    • Revanth Reddy’s growing influence was further highlighted when he contested against Chief Minister KCR himself, showcasing his rising stature within the state.
  2. Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu:
    • Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, emerged as another prominent figure in the party’s efforts to unseat KCR.
    • Prior to the elections, the 62-year-old leader embarked on a significant 1,400 km padyatra across the state, aiming not only to secure votes but also to engage with the people and understand their concerns.
    • His ‘People’s March’ played a crucial role in the Congress party’s resurgence in Telangana.
  3. Uttam Kumar Reddy:
    • Formerly the head of the Congress’ Telangana unit until July 2021, Uttam Kumar Reddy remains a popular figure among party workers in the state.
    • Although replaced by Revanth Reddy, he continues to be a significant name in the race for the Chief Minister’s post.
    • Uttam Kumar Reddy expressed his willingness to abide by the party’s decision when it became evident that the Congress was poised for victory in Telangana.

As the leadership dynamics unfold, these three leaders present different backgrounds, styles, and contributions within the Congress party in Telangana.
