Nehru Birth Anniversary

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi offered floral tributes to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary at Shantivan in the national capital on Tuesday.

Kharge, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), expressed homage to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, crediting him for elevating India from a starting point to the pinnacle. Kharge hailed Nehru as the architect of modern India, a fearless defender of democracy, and a source of inspiration. He highlighted Nehru’s progressive ideas that propelled India’s social, political, and economic development despite numerous challenges. Kharge also emphasized Nehru’s role in fostering unity among the people, encouraging them to live together without discrimination and always prioritizing the nation.

Children’s Day is observed annually on November 14 to honor India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Affectionately known as ‘Chacha Nehru,’ he advocated for expressing love and care towards children. Following his death, it was collectively decided to celebrate his birthday as ‘Bal Diwas’ or Children’s Day in India.

Born on November 14, 1889, in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru played a crucial role in the country’s freedom struggle and became Prime Minister on August 15, 1947. After his passing on May 27, 1964, the nation commemorates Children’s Day on his birth anniversary.

On this occasion, schools nationwide organize various activities like games and competitions for students. Government bodies also pay tribute to Nehru and arrange commemorative events. Before 1956, India celebrated Children’s Day on November 20, as declared by the United Nations. However, after Nehru’s demise, a unanimous parliamentary resolution shifted the celebration to his birth anniversary.
